Just to close the loop regarding the issues that you mentioned to me
tangentially about eglibc in Arch causing problems in telnet (unrelated to
the ftp segfault): Have a look at the last two posts here:

Eric claims Arch doesn't use eglibc. In any case, I'll let you two guys
duke it out. :) I've done what I can get to get you guys talking. If you're
still encountering problems, I'd suggest contacting him directly on the above
bug tracker. I can help in alpha testing it if you need.
Btw, re the ftp segfault: Eric did confirm that he was able to see the same
segfault I was seeing, and that it is gone now with the new git version that
he just pushed out to the Arch "testing" repo. So good chance that bug, even
though it was not entirely understood, is now dead.
