The client "whois" is by far the least thoroughly tested utility in
   the collection GNU Inetutils, probably because I do not understand
   it myself, nor do I use it regularly. All bug triaging of "whois"
   is most welcome.

If it is that broken, how about we disable it?  

Though there is a point in letting it be enabled, and having people
who care, report bugs, and maybe patches.
