IIRC, in previous versions of lilypond, you could specify which articulation you wanted to have closest to the note. This doesn't happen in 1.5.73+(a few days of cvs).
This:
\score{ \notes {a---. a-.-- a---. a-.--}\paper{}}
produces four notes, all with staccato nearest to the note and legato
further away.
