Been a while since I've actually had a chance to revisit this issue.
As off 1.5.73, building outside of the source directory still fails.
Actually, even building inside of the source directory, and doing something
like:
cd lilypond-1.5.73
../lilypond-1.5.73/configure
fails.
Appears that during the build process, it changes into the source directory
to do build stuff.
