Update from the bug report on bugs.gentoo.org: The head/tail syntax issues addressed by Chandler's patch are not directly related to gcc 3.3 but are needed for compatibility with coreutils 5.0 (which is more strictly POSIX compliant than its predecessors). _____________

If you are a bit good at patching an tweaking things, look at http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=26136 where you will find a patch which, if applied at the appropriate point in the configure, make, make install process, should fix the problem.
