Your example file in http://mail.gnu.org/archive/html/lilypond-user/2004-02/msg00223.html turns out to be an excellent example of the bug.

I updated to 2.1.24hwn1 and am now able to get the over/under interlaced
eighth notes with the slurs. The note heads don't disappear any more. But, going back to my original file I'm getting:
################################## cd /home/lily-puts/biber/ lilypond /home/lily-puts/biber/01.ly lilypond (GNU LilyPond) 2.1.24.hwn1 Running usr... Now processing: `/home/lily-puts/biber/01.ly' Parsing...Interpreting music...
lilypond: error: LilyPond crashed (signal 11). lilypond: error: Please submit a bug report to [EMAIL PROTECTED] lilypond: warning: Running LilyPond failed. Rerun with --verbose for a trace.
LilyPond finished at Tue Feb 17 14:24:25

I ran Lily again with --verbose and have attached the output. I presume you want a *.ly file which causes this. I don't have time at the moment to chase down what made Lily choke but I can try later on this evening.
