This is generally a byproduct of running an unpatched Ghostscript. You
can either use GUB (which uses its own patched copy of Ghostscript) or
search the bug-lilypond archives for a patch against ghostscript 8.5x.
On my machine, there was an extra level of frustration because I forgot
I had an unpatched version of gs in /usr/local/bin and the patched
version in /usr/bin. It took me a few hours to figure out why I was
still generating huge files even though I'd applied the patch.
