That's still true, but you would have split rests if you have \bar
"|:" or key sig changes in the part.

OK.  Anyway, it wouldn't hurt IMHO to ignore `grace skips' during the
construction of multi-bar rests.

Unfortunately, it doesn't work like that. Putting

  R1*2  !  R1*2

means that the moment marked by ! is processed, which leads to a bar line, and that forces the MM rests to be split.
