I think the issue here is that changing the associatedVoice happens one step
later than expected.  I could be wrong, but I don't think this is obviously
documented.

I've been bitten by this several times.  Usually a workaround is possible,
namely by moving the associatedVoice change back one syllable.  There are
times this won't work, though; for example, you can't change associatedVoice
for the very first syllable.
