We have to document it as a @knownissue somewhere; let's just find
where the most
convenient place would be.
For the IR, my suggestion is to add a note in the documentation of
self-alignment-X that the
value is only taken into account if the X-offset of the object is
calculated using ly:self-alignment-interface::x_aligned_on_self

Not at all! It works the same for almost all objects, where the position
is determined
relative to some other object, i.e. for all objects where it makes sense
to specify self-alignment-X.
