Why not create a command-line option --maintainer-mode for confifgure script, which would enable checking for dependencies when building from Git sources? I'd rather not have more than one source of information about building dependencies, so I vote for adding a subection in install.itely about building from Git and a URL to this in a text file INSTALL.git at top of the sources.
