Actually, there is no collision when using the default font, even
though there could be more space:

\markup \column {\fontsize #0.1 ppp \fontsize #10 XX}
\header {
title = \markup \medium \fontsize #0.1 ppp
subtitle = \markup \medium \fontsize #10 XX
}

So, I think this is because your characters go below the "line".
Again, this can easily be fixed by adding some space inside your
subtitle markup.
