Yes, this can be done now.  Rule of thumb is that if it compiles
in 2.12.0, it compiles in any 2.12.x version without convert-ly.
New syntaxes are fine.

Just spend a moment to double-check that the name of the new
syntax is good, 'cause you can't change it until the next devel
period.  :)
(I have no particular objection to your proposed syntax here; this
is just a general caution)
