This fixes the version numbering when output-suffix is defined so that it starts from
0 and is only added to the output file name if really necessary.
Filename handling code is removed to its own function.
Accented characters now allowed in output-suffix.

Crashes with the ghostscript backend when accented characters are present in any part
of the output filename have been fixed by another patch.
