It has a huge section on splitting filenames which we don't use (we use the good old --split=section). It has similar really ugly things, such as hard-coding the names of different colored pages in the 2nd-layer TOC page. (this probably doesn't work with the translation infrastructure, BTW!) Fix it. Maybe also integrate it with the main doc init.pl file?
