Ok, this is what I am going to do then.

The only two things that are not clear to me now, is (1) what is the convention about the units in which 'length is measured: is it in halfspaces, or in normal Lilypond units? and (2) this phrase: "calc_length() ... which bypasses the callback for 'length if it's set to a number" -- I can not find a reference to 'length in the body
of calc_length(), is it more subtle than that?

Also, why should the check for numeric 'length be in pure_height() and not in
calc_length()?
