It is the second: Currently the whole volta bracket takes up a rectangle,
even
though just the top edge is used in the middle. This causes brackets like
in the
example to be shifted up far more then is actually required/desired.
What would be desirable is that the extents of the volta bracket is
composed of
three rectangles (two for the downward lines and one for the horizontal
line, which
has much smaller vertical extent).
BTW, I'm running into the very same problem with a Strauss Waltz...
