By the way, the difficulty here is that there is a circular dependence. Stem length depends on beam formatting, which depends on horizontal layout, which depends on knowing if the accidental will collide with the stem. One possible solution would be to forbid accidentals from overlapping with any part of the previous note column (ie. disable skyline spacing for note columns, and go back to using extent boxes).
