I agree. In tight spacing the tucking looks nice.  This comparison is identical 
to the second line of the image I posted at the start of the thread,
A: 2.12.3    B: 2.13.43

Now I have to be honest about my use of \noBreak.  The two lines are within the 
spacings accepted by 2.13.43 (that is, \noBreak can be removed with no change). 
 However, if we prevent the notes from tucking under flats (either with 
extra-spacing height or by using ver2.12.3) then LilyPond wants to split that 
tight line into two.  So Lilypond tries to avoid the ugly A.
