It's apparently so common a thing that after randomly searching
for madrigals,
the very first one I came up to demonstrates this all over the

The alignment in that example is incredibly inconsistent - see as
an alternative measure 6, where Mis is left aligned and face is
pretty much centred. The alignment on this example is so variable
that I suspect they've just got it wrong in measure 2. The
examples I was able to find all align as recommended by Stone and
implemented by LilyPond.
It looks like the engraver intended to follow the standard placement
for lyrics in most places, but just got it wrong occasionally.
The most glaring example of this is in page 5, second system,
last bar. On the alto line both verses have the same word,
but the syllable "De" of December is differently aligned.
This just looks careless to me, and a poor example to put
forward as a model.
