I have an idea of what I want to see on the page, found one
instance of that
in this piece, and would like that to be the way my piece is set.

it difficult to believe given all the individual alterations one
can do in
lilypond that this is impossible to change.
Is there no way whatsoever to force a center alignment to the
first note of
a multi-note syllable?
Lyrics to melismata are left-aligned and by default slurs
are taken to indicate melismata. This is the normal
typesetting practice. But you can turn this behaviour
off. See melismaBusyProperties at the end of "Multiple
notes to one syllable" in Section 2.1.1 of the Notation
Reference for 2.13. Here's the link:

You'll have to space the lyrics manually through the slur
with single underscores, though.
