Perhaps I am thinking too complicated. Since one gives the tuning a name, this command would likely be used right in the start of the code, and it should suffice to just write \set stringTuning and be done.
However, if we are actually talking about _defining_ a tuning, then one might want to think about moving it into a context modification after all.
