The problem seems to be the value of MAX_ARG_STRLEN (131072) which limits the length of each individual command line argument. The failing length was 131756 (see comment 6 above). This has been a limitation since Linux 2.6.23, and seems to be a safely issue.

The workarounds seem non-trivial, but might suggest an approach for a long-term fix.
