I'm almost 100% certain it does not relate to performance. On my Windows
Vista system, 2.15.9 is _just_ slower than 2.15.7 (sorry, don't have
15.8). The attached image shows the ratio between timing for all the
regression tests - as you'll see, there's more above 100% than below, but
overall the newer version is only 7% slower for all 998 tests.
