hmm, interesting. BTW, "make clean" is not reliable either. In my mind,
the only reliable thing is:
- completely remove the build directory (we strong suggest doing
out-of-tree builds for this reason)
- build from scratch, starting from configure.
This still doesn't work 2-4 times a year when it requires
running ./autogen.sh --noconfigure again, but other than that it's a
pretty good recipe.
