I used

\version "2.14.1"

\new StaffGroup <<
 \new Staff { c''1 | c''1 }
 \new Lyrics \lyricmode {
   \once \override LyricHyphen #'whiteout = ##t
   hell1 -- o1
 }
 \new Staff { R1 | R1 }

and while it does technically white-out the lyric hyphen, it isn't
_that_ clearer :) See attached.

Is there a way to increase the area around the lyric hyphen to add
more white around the glyph without having to resort to boxes and
layers?
