New issue 2161 by [email protected]: Nonfastforwarding push to staging
http://code.google.com/p/lilypond/issues/detail?id=2161

There's a suggestion to use something called "git hooks" to help us avoid making certain mistakes in git (i.e. pushing branches mistakenly, pushing to master mistakenly, etc).

A better write-up is here:
  http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.comp.gnu.lilypond.devel/42190
and especially:
  http://article.gmane.org/gmane.comp.gnu.lilypond.devel/42206

Since it's been 7 weeks, I am not likely to find the time to understand the issue and consult with the savannah admins. If somebody else could do this, I would be happy to "sign a form to authorize it" (i.e. send an email). Otherwise, I think this excellent suggestion will go un-implemented until at least early summer.
