Users do not need to know the column number in order to solve the problem,
which is their file-saving settings. Showing the line number and the
(malformed) text in the error message is quite helpful, though, and gives
the user the option of simply substituting ASCII letters until he learns
how to make his editor cooperate.
The error message really needs to say the "encoding" is bad, not the
characters. The characters themselves are shönen und ergötslichen.
