Just to clarify: It's possible to manually override the distances with
\override NoteColumn #'force-hshift = VALUE
However, this command is applied after lilypond has made its formatting
decisions (similar to the `extra-offset' property), thus it can result in
unwanted collisions. In particular, note heads can overlap for small
intervals like a second.
