there's a nice addition mentioned in new git instructions (http://codereview.appspot.com/5539062/diff/3004/Documentation/contributor/source-code.itexi#newcode215): adding this line export PS1="\u@\h \w\$(__git_ps1)$ " to hidden file ~/.bashrc results in currently checked-out branch name being displayed at command line prompt.
