Pushing this one as 92b4c250ab1055463a2cd4b1b11e599d04505aac to staging
since it passed patchy and contained only "obvious" (TM) fixes. I have
doubts that it will actually cure this issue, but that will get obvious
only after this patch has been part of both sides of a regtest comparison
for long enough.
I am marking this as owned by me and "Started" so that I don't completely
lose track of seeing whether this actually helps, but I don't have anything
in the pipeline in case it doesn't.
