We must follow different conventions then. My expectation is that each
bar contains the same number of beats.

Perhaps I wasn't clear. Lilypond has a facility to check for correctly
filled bars. I believe your request to change the behaviour of
\alternative would interfere with her ability to do that for music in
alternative sections.

Yes, I can see the elegance of your suggestion, especially for music
that changes meter so often at the end of repeated sections.
