It is easy to illustrate this difficulty and solution in the LSR entry 
that goes in the manual section on ottavas. I just amended it with 
"Short text is especially useful to clarify when a brief ottava 
starts to apply."

It seems wise to let ottava spanners get very short,
  \override Staff.OttavaBracket.minimum-length = #0.05
or disappear
  \override Staff.OttavaBracket.minimum-length = #'()
