GrandStaff is used deliberately here to avoid the bar lines extending between the two staves, potentially crossing lyric syllables - except that I've just discovered the bar lines _do_ extend between the two staves, even when GrandStaff is used! That needs more investigation. Your other two points are valid, however. As this template is obtained from the LSR you may provide a change there yourself and it will make its way into the docs automatically.
