It does, but you have to explicitely specify the mailbox type in the
command line :
mail -f maildir://path/to/the/mailbox
The same holds true for other utilities.

These files are generated automatically so it is no use to keep them in
the repository. Please read file README-alpha for the detailed
information on how to bootstrap the code from CVS.
