The DejaGNU testsuite was withdrawn more than nine years ago, on 2011-11-28 (prior to mailtils version 2.99.96). The related authentication code hasn't changed since 2007-12-03. These two facts incline me to believe that it is rather the practice of resetting the HOME variable that should be fairly recent in Debian. That being said, I would propose the attached patch.
