Interesting. Of course, the CVS versions of GNU make are not production ready, but I'd like to reproduce this bug. Please provide more information, such as the version of glibc you're trying to build, the OS type/version you're building on, what configure commands you used, etc. If you'd be willing, you could also run make under the debugger and get a stack trace where the assert is taken.
