Here's an updated version which is much closer to "done" at least from my POV. I believe most of the requested improvements are there, the semaphore code is factored, there's even a start on documentation. Despite what was said about ifdefs before, the entire patch is currently enclosed in "#ifdef POSIX /* PARALLEL-SYNC */" pending any ports.
