Perhaps we need to split the HAVE_DOS_PATHS flag into two flags: something like ACCEPT_DOS_PATHS which enables various pathname parsing functions to understand DOS-style paths, and something like RETURN_DOS_PATHS, which is used in functions that generate absolute pathnames like abspath etc. to decide whether the generated pathname should be DOS-like or UNIX-like.
