Hi,

According to my understanding of the current documentation it should be
possible to replace suffixes with pattern substitution references or
functions. But as of Make 4.3 on Debian this does not work:

make -sf - A=bcd.efg a <<EOF
B := \$(A:.%=)

%:
        echo \$B
EOF

expected result:
bcd

actual result:
bcd.efg

Same problem with $(patsubst .%,,$(A)).
