Having regard to the following facts:

1. the partition I wanted to expand is my "/" partition;
2. at most, I could have expanded it by only 1004MB;
3. it's probably not beyond me to re-create the partition I deleted and
then put an ext3 filesystem on it, which would give me the 1004MB back
anyway, though in a slightly different form than I'd hoped; and
4. my Linux knowledge is generally only rudimentary,

I won't try your suggestion, but will try instead merely to resurrect
the former vfat partition as an ext3 partition.
