I understand this, but there is a problem of consistency and, thus, of
expectations. When you switch from vi to readline vi-mode (which any
vi user using readline emulation will do hundreds of times a day) C-w
defeats your expectations and you end up deleting too much and undoing
the additional deletions. At least, it's no so bad as pressing C-w in
your browser :).
