Because there aren't really any user-settable knobs to use to customize it.
The faces feature works to show bracketed-paste contents -- the original
reason for its implementation -- and the results of incremental searches.
The one command that utilizes faces that a user can use is exchange-point-
and-mark. It's not an arbitrary way to highlight the region. I'm going to
wait until we have a little more operational experience with it before
extending it.
