this is probably related to also using --listed-incremental
it appears to be probing stuff on nfs and procps file systems.

here is full command i'm running:
/usr/local/bin/gtar -c -f /dev/sdlt14nr -b 256 -v --one-file-system
--ignore-failed-read --totals --listed-incremental
/usr/local/adm/etc/bckincremental.g0dup06  ./ /usr/local

and here is a snippet of messages (another issue is this of course results in
a non-zero exit status):

/usr/local/bin/gtar: ./home/ts9user/public_html/default.gif: Warning:
Cannot stat:Permiss
ion denied
/usr/local/bin/gtar: ./home/ts9user/public_html/index.html: Warning:
Cannot stat: Permission denied
/usr/local/bin/gtar: ./proc/5912/fd/5: Warning: Cannot stat: No such
