Thanks for reporting that.  That's most likely due to an
incompatibility between NetBSD and POSIX; see
<http://gnats.netbsd.org/43154>.  To test my
theory, please try the following two patches,
which work around that incompatibility:

http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/bug-tar/2010-11/msg00100.html

If they fix the problem, the bug should be resolved in the
next release of GNU tar.
