Looks like most (if not all) of the unexpected failures were due to tar aborting after printing the following message: tar: value 1992461302 out of uid_t range 0..2097151 The test platform was: uname -v = Darwin Kernel Version 12.5.0: Sun Sep 29 13:33:47 PDT 2013; root:xnu-2050.48.12~1/RELEASE_X86_64 The message seems to be printed once for each file added to the archive being created by the test, so it appears that somehow the files being created during the test setup steps are getting an owner UID that's not consistent with the tar binary's expectations for the uid_t type...
