Greetings,

Back in 2004 O_DIRECT support was requested, and the response was that it
was already on the todo list:
http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/bug-tar/2004-07/msg00017.html

I have run into cache pollution issues causing degraded performance when
using tar to copy/un-tar files to an active server, as seems to not be
terribly uncommon:

I am wondering what happened to this request, as modern tar still does not
seem to support a direct mode, or other options to prevent cache pollution
when un-taring large archives.

Has anybody else found creative solutions for this situation?

Thanks,
      Aaron
