A warning (understood as something non-fatal) doesn't help you. It merely tells you that the harm is done. An error is not something to be taken lightly. It is very common to use tar(1) in various scripts. Some of these scripts may not use 'standard' filenames, e.g. because of writing a temporary file. Changing the behavior today would break all these scripts. Let's add that some of these scripts may be obscure pieces of shell script with no error handling, running 'forever' while being long forgotten, this could lead to completely unpredictable damage. -- Best regards, Michał Górny
