Actually this is a bug, _ clearly shouldn't cause an infinite loop.

My desired behavior is for _ and ^ to do subscripts and superscripts
within @math.  To get variable names with _'s inside @math, @var should
be used.  It should be used even now, although I'm not sure if that will
fix the bug.
