I think @nbsp{} is a good idea.  But not @activetildes{}, since that
would change the Texinfo input language and makeinfo and any other
texinfo processors would have to change.

Thanks, that's great!  There are plenty of projects for texinfo.tex that
I don't have time to work on.  I'll write you about them (and your main
texinfo.tex patch) separately (probably tomorrow, I have to take off
now).
